Eurojust welcomes U.S. financial support to the International Centre for the Crime of Aggression

The U.S. Department of State has announced that it will provide USD 1 million to the International Centre for the Prosecution of the Crime of Aggression against Ukraine (ICPA), established at Eurojust.

Eurojust welcomes this financial contribution, which will support the ICPA’s ongoing work to build the strongest possible cases for future prosecution of the crime of aggression committed in Ukraine.

The contribution will be administered through the European Commission’s Service for Foreign Policy Instruments, which provides Eurojust with an initial budget of EUR 8.3 million for the ICPA until December 2024.

European Commissioner for Justice, Didier Reynders stated: The financial contribution from the U.S. to the ICPA underlines the strength of the transatlantic cooperation and strong U.S. commitment to international accountability efforts in relation to the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine.

The Department of State’s contribution will complement existing U.S. support to the ICPA. The U.S. Department of Justice’s Special Prosecutor for the Crime of Aggression, Ms. Jessica Kim, represents the United States at the ICPA. This enables the ICPA to have full access to the substantial body of expertise and resources that the U.S. Department of Justice has amassed in response to Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.

The U.S. Department of Justice has also signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Eurojust-supported joint investigation team on alleged core international crimes committed in Ukraine. It has already contributed important evidence to the Core International Crimes Evidence Database (CICED), managed by the Agency.

The United States is a valued partner of Eurojust and the European Union in the international efforts to ensure justice for Ukraine.
